The Merits of Sūrah Al Fātihah
This sūrah is called ‘The Opening’ (al Fatihah) because by it the Mighty Book opens. It is also called ‘The Matrix of the Book’ because it gathers all foundational objectives. Additionally, it is called ‘The Seven Oft-Repeated’, ‘The Healing’, ‘The Sufficient’, ‘The Abundant’, ‘The Foundation’ and ‘The Praise’.
What has been revealed regarding the Fātihah
On the authority of Abū Saʿīd al Khudrī, may Allah be pleased with him, who said, “I was praying when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me, so I didn’t respond until after my prayer. I came to him and he ﷺ said ‘What prevented you from coming to me?’ I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, I was praying’. He ﷺ said, ‘Didn't Allah say “O you who believe, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when they call you to what brings you life”?’ Then he ﷺ said, ‘Indeed, I will teach you the greatest sūrah in the Qur'ān before you leave the masjid’. So he took my hand. And when he wanted to leave the masjid, I said ‘O Messenger of Allah, verily you said “Indeed, I will teach you the greatest sūrah in the Qur'ān”’. He ﷺ said, ‘Yes, Alhamdulillah Rab al ʿalamīn - it is the Seven Oft-Repeated and the Mighty Qur'ān which I was given’”.
