The heart of the Qur'ān, Sūrah Yāsīn, contains many gifts and lessons. It is a Meccan sūrah that contains eighty-three verses. The entire sūrah was revealed in Mecca; although it is said that part of one verse was revealed in Medina, the consensus is that all its verses were revealed in Mecca.
The Merits of Sūrah Yāsīn
Many statements have been revealed in regards to its merits, qualities and superiority, from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and many of the Companions.
On the authority of Abū Bakr, Anas, Abū Huraira, Umm Dardā’ and Abū Qatāda al Ansari, may Allah be pleased with them all, as is in the Sunan of Tirmidhī, Abū Dāwūd, Nisā’ī and Ibn Mājah; Al Hākim in the Mustadrak said that the following hadith is sound (sahīh) and Bukhārī and Muslim didn’t record it:
He ﷺ said, “Recite Yāsīn upon your deceased”.
And he ﷺ said, “Whoever recites Yāsīn at night, all their previous sins are forgiven, and whoever recites Yāsīn in the evening will pass the night in delight and joy until the morning, and whoever recites Yāsīn in the morning, their day will be shaded with delight and joy until the evening”.
Ibn ʿAtiyah al Andalusiyah and others from the Qur'ān commentators said, “We tried this and it worked”.
The truthful, believed one spoke the truth ﷺ: “Recite Yāsīn upon your deceased, for it lightens their torment and the pangs of death”.
Abū Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said, “Whoever visits one or both parents on Friday, and recites upon them Yāsīn, it is a forgiveness for them (the parents)”.
